Two women are about to meet for the first time since they were adopted when they were babies in South Korea.
Because of an online ancestry and DNA test website, Eiley Misfeldt and Soojee Dufresne found out they were lost-long sisters from South Korea.
They were both adopted at a very young age and, as any adoptee would agree, they wanted to find out more about their family.
They both took the DNA ancestry test from a website called 23AndMe and the results came out, they had a sister living in the US!
“I just felt like so just overwhelmed with happiness and just all good,” Soojee shared about the experience.
Soojee lived in New York and visited Eiley, who lived in Eden Prairie, Minnesota for the fourth of July weekend. She came with her husband and young son.
“All I’ve ever known genetics wise is my son when he was born,” Soojee said. “That was like my big moment of ‘I have somebody that is related to me and that I know is related to me.’ So, it just feels like an expansion.”
A lot of non-adoptees don’t quite understand why adoptees want to learn more about their families and where they came from. They have a hard time understanding especially when the adoptees came from an unhappy situation and their adoptive family raised them well.
But for the adoptees, it’s not about hurting their adoptive family, it’s about understanding their heritage.
A lot of them are curious about where they came from and what life would have been like if they had never been adopted. They want to understand who they are and how and if their past influenced them even until now.
Some have also tried to search for their birth family to learn more about their family medical history.
And then there are some who feel something’s missing from their life. And that no matter how close they are to their family, they still find it hard to relate to them and vice versa.
There are a lot of reasons adoptees search for their birth family so it’s great that the modern online world now has made it a little easier for their search.
Eiley stretched her neck anticipating Soojee’s arrival. She couldn’t believe she was meeting her sister in a few minutes.
“So weird and it doesn’t even feel real,” Eiley said.
And to think they hadn’t even known about each other before December 2021.
That’s when Eiley took the test and both found out they had sisters.
And Soojee almost missed out on this wonderful reunion when she almost deleted the email about it.
“It’s wild, and I’m a swiper,” Soojee admitted. “I could have easily deleted that because I’m just, I’m one to go through my emails and clean it up really quick. So, it’s just unbelievable.”
Good thing she saw the email and opened it!
Now, they have a bucket list of things they want to do together so they can get to know the sister they never knew they had. And they’re planning a trip together to visit South Korea.
