When the people at Huntington Beach woke up on July 22, 2022, they were planning on enjoying the sand and ocean water.
They had no idea they would witness a plane crash a few feet away from them.
Abby Crimmins from Missouri was there with her bridal party, enjoying the final days of her singlehood when they witness the plane crash.
“Bachelorette trip. I have everything set up, so beautiful. All of a sudden a plane falls out of the sky and into the ocean,” Abby told CBS Los Angeles. “We thought we were paying for the ocean, we were paying for a show. A plane falls into the ocean, it’s crazy.”
Yes, a small plane carrying a banner nosedived into Huntington State Beach.
The people sunbathing and building sandcastles were shocked to witness this unusual scene at the beach. Although some of the regular beachgoers weren’t too shocked since they said it’s just a normal day when something happens there.
Two beachgoers were able to capture the plane nosediving into the ocean.
And talk about luck.
There were 750 lifeguards-in-training waiting on the beach to start the California Surf Lifesaving Junior Guards Championship. They were currently on a break from the competition and were resting under the tents.
If they had started earlier, hundreds of people would have been in the water at that moment.
Who knows how many people this plane might have hit when it crashed?
But, on the other hand, the pilot was grateful and lucky because there were hundreds of lifeguards on the beach. Several of the teenage guards and instructors rushed to the scene to rescue the pilot and anyone else who might have been injured.
And, according to Casey Graham of the Santa Barbara County Lifeguard, when they reached the plane, the pilot was already outside the cockpit and sitting on the broken wings. The pilot was conscious enough to inform them that he was the only person on the plane.
He didn’t have any visible injuries but the paramedics still evaluated the pilot when he reached the shore.
“Anytime you hear an incident like taking place, it’s always a little scary,” Jennifer Carey, Huntington Beach spokesperson, said. “Fortunately, there were no injuries, at least no serious injuries and I think [it was] the best outcome you can expect.”
According to the FAA, the plane is registered to a media company in Florida and it looked like it was pulling a promotional banner across the skies before it crashed.
The authorities pulled the plane wreckage to shore and the pilot is lucky to be alive with no serious injuries.
The plane’s wing was ripped and you couldn’t even see the cockpit. That he was able to slide out of the cockpit and onto the wing is a miracle.
Authorities are still investigating the reason the plane crashed that afternoon in Southern California.
