Sometimes, things don’t go exactly as planned – especially if there’s cold and icy weather involved. An elementary school in Montevallo, Alabama, was forced to delay the school day by two hours because of icy roads on a cold winter day.
As a result, the school wouldn’t be able to serve breakfast and most pupils would have to go hungry in class.
The school did send a notification to the parents a couple of hours before, but some kids were already on their way – including the students on Wayne Price’s school bus.
Mr. Price didn’t want his kids to go hungry, so he decided to go to McDonald’s instead.
Since the school day was delayed anyway, the bus driver decided to make a quick stop at the fast-food chain and bought no less than 50 breakfast biscuits – one for every child aboard the bus.
His act of kindness has not gone unnoticed and the students were both surprised and thrilled to be able to eat something before classes started.
“Mr. Price, one of our bus drivers, truly demonstrates the spirit of Christmas! On Tuesday, when school was delayed due to icy roads and we weren’t able to serve breakfast, he purchased biscuits from McDonald’s for his entire bus of students! What a kind act that our students will forever remember!” a representative of the Montevallo Elementary School wrote on their Facebook page.
Mr. Price has without a doubt made a very lasting impact on the students aboard his bus with his generous gesture.
The Facebook-post has since gone viral with thousands of likes and comments supporting the kind man.
“I’ve seen this man give so much of himself to his community. I’ve experienced first hand the hope and guidance he brings to people who may not find it anywhere else. I’m glad he’s getting the acknowledgment he deserves,” Derek Wilson wrote.
Wayne himself couldn’t believe all the attention he’s gotten over the past days and says his act of kindness was a natural and impromptu decision and that it was simply the right thing to do.
When one of the kids told him that he must be wealthy, he simply told that he isn’t rich, but is in a full-time ministry.
“When it came down to the financial side, it was just second nature. I really did not think about it. I thought, hey this would be neat. I bet they will like this,” the bus driver told ABC.
And because it was almost Christmas, he decided to share and spread some of that joyful and cheerful Christmas spirit.
“We get caught up in materialistic things, even buying biscuits to a certain element is a little materialistic, but Christmas is giving. Christmas is showing love.”
The man says that a simple smile can go a long way.
Even though he doesn’t have much time to talk and interact with the elementary school kids on the bus, he always makes sure that the students leave the bus in a better mood than when they stepped on.
“I was just so surprised that he did that,” Elizabeth Lopez, who is now in the fifth grade, told the news station. “I did not think he was going to do it. I am really thankful for having him as a bus driver, and he feels like a dad to me.”
There was one small catch to the free breakfast, however.
Mr. Price kindly asked all of the students to take the wrappers of their biscuits with them so that they wouldn’t end up on the floor. The simple request was no problem at all for the youngsters because the bus floor was as clean as a whistle afterward.
“I appreciate and thank you for all the kind words. I enjoy flying under the radar, instead of on the radar, so it’s kind of awkward for me to see all these posts. I do have a genuine love for the kids on my bus. I was just taking care of my kids,” the Good Samaritan concluded.
