Mudslides are powerful natural events. They are extremely dangerous because of carrying heavy debris at significant speeds. Mudslides typically cause a lot of damage to electrical, water, gas, and sewage lines.

Take a look at a horrifying mudslide that occurred in the village Chamoson, Switzerland.

Because mudslides destroy everything that’s in their way, you can expect them to shatter the vegetation, trees, and even buildings. We bet that civil engineers and constructors are among 11 million people who saw the video on YouTube. Let’s hope everyone in charge will be extra cautious when following proper land-use procedures in the future.

Looking at all the debris that seemingly comes out of nowhere is quite unsettling.

People from the Valais region in Switzerland have already seen such an occurrence. Senior residents don’t look particularly shaken by the insane amount of mud flooding the street. On the other hand, we were taken aback.

According to the video description, people heard the noise a couple of minutes before the mudslide, and everyone got outside. They were intrigued to see what was going on.

However, no one was prepared for the volume of the mudslide. Some cars and houses were destroyed in the incident. Luckily, none of the onlookers was injured.

As stated by experts, extreme weather conditions and the steepness of the terrain are primary reasons for frequent natural disasters.

On top of it all, the ground in most of southern Switzerland is susceptible to erosion, strong winds, and severe flooding in the winter. People can also take part in the blame. Overexploitation of the mountain forests and inadequately protected transport routes are the greatest problems caused by human actions.

Did you know that over the past three decades, on average, about ten people have lost their lives each year in tragic events caused by natural disasters?

In terms of geographic position, the United States might be away from Switzerland, but the statistics are equally scary. Every year, landslides in the U.S. take the lives of between 20 and 50 people.

Not everything is black and white. Chamoson is actually a beautiful place to live, as long as you listen to Mother Nature.

Stretching from the banks of the Rhone to the Muveran mountains, Chamoson is famous for its spectacular vineyards, orchards, and meadows.

The most appealing thing about this place is that most wine cellars are open to the public for tasting or tours.

Unfortunately, we have to move back to the mudslide.

Yes, we know it is better to talk about beautiful landscapes and breathtaking nature, but a mudslide appeared and demolished a complete street. At first, it didn’t look dangerous, and people didn’t think much of it. Ten seconds later, and things became serious.

You have to see it to believe it. There is mud everywhere. As always, people in comments found something positive in the situation, and one comment made us laugh a lot: “This is not a mudslide. It’s just one of the many rivers of chocolate that flow naturally in Switzerland.” Wouldn’t it be great if that was the case?!

If you think a mudslide is likely to occur in the place where you live, listen to unusual sounds, and be on the lookout for any sudden increase or decrease of a water flow.

From the moment you first hear the snapping of branches and trees, you have less than a minute until the mudslide gets close. Remember to never drive a car through the water of an unknown depth. That could be fatal. In fact, abandon your vehicle immediately. It’s the least safe place to be when a mudslide occurs.
