Fed up employee posts sign on McDonalds drive-thru that’s hard for customers to ignore
Customers were caught off guard when they pulled up to the drive-thru window.

If you haven’t heard, massive walkouts at fast food and retail chains have been occurring over the past few months. The reason behind it all can be a bit complicated, but ultimately, it seems to have boiled down to people not wanting to work long hours for a minimum wage that hasn’t changed in quite a long time. Honestly, we can’t blame em!

For one McDonalds employee in Louisville, Kentucky, a quiet exit wasn’t a part of the plan.

A photo has already made its rounds along the social media circuits and it’s funny (or maybe sad) enough to have hit mainstream news outlets as well! While heading through their local drive-through, a customer spotted a sign taped to the speaker/receiver near the menu. It read:

“We are closed because I am quitting and I hate this job.”

The Twitter user who posted the photo talked to TODAY and gave a bit of insight.

@GreatApeDad didn’t explain which location he had visited that had this sign outside of it, but he did give us some more information.

β€œI just see there and one of the monitors which had been not working for many weeks, that sign that was posted there so I personally thought it was funny, so I took a picture, uploaded it to Twitter not thinking much of anything about it,” @GreatApeDad told TODAY Food. β€œAnd much to my surprise it’s had quite a success.”

As it turns out, the sign had been placed there the night before and nobody had noticed it until the next day! People had been driving through all day noticing the sign and apparently, not saying anything to the staff at the window.

The employee had explained that it wasn’t just a random person that quit their shift, it was a manager.

The night manager had quit and the restaurant had been forced to close the night before. It was an unfortunate event for the others who were working, but the man who snapped the photo understood the plight of the overworked fast-food manager.

β€œI used to work in the service industry myself,” he said. β€œI think that people are just frustrated, especially the working class people who are there in the front line… things that are in a boiling point where I can definitely see where someone on a Saturday night that doesn’t want to be working the drive-thru β€” wants to just call it quits.”

It’s an incredibly tough and thankless job that also doesn’t pay well – a recipe for turnover.

While McDonald’s headquarters declined to answer any of Today’s questions, we can infer that it’s probably not a good look. We get it, people quit. What it looks like is happening, however, is a massive exit from the underpaid fast food industry.

There are some things that have already been done by chains and businesses to bring new staff on board.

One of the most common things seen is a sign-on bonus that kicks in after a predetermined time. Apart from that, many places have also started increasing wages, McDonald’s in particular! While we don’t know if the burgers of the future will cost $5 a pop, we can say that things are changing faster than they ever have before. Also, be kind to food service workers!
