In the very first episode of the series Surprise Surprise back in 2014, Pharrell Williams gave one of his biggest fans the surprise of a lifetime.
Holly Addison was 21-years-old at the time and was nominated for the show by her friend Lauren Hawke. Lauren wanted to recognize Holly for her amazing work doing charity fundraising in the memory of her father.
In 2013, Holly’s dad died of brain cancer. The young woman wanted to do something in his honor and raised money as well as advocated for Cancer Research UK, The Katherine House Hospice and Brain Tumour Research.
After all that Holly had been through, her friend Lauren wanted to make sure Holly received something in return – to meet her biggest idol, Pharrell.
At the beginning of the video, Holly is sitting in a crowded restaurant enjoying brunch and mimosas with her girlfriends. She has no idea that there are cameras planted everywhere, or that everyone else in the restaurant is in on a big secret.
Soon, out of nowhere (or so it seems to Holly), their server starts breaking out in dance as Pharrell’s “Happy” blares over the restaurant speakers. Holly is unsure what’s going on but it seems like she thinks maybe the server was just having a little fun.
Then, a few more servers and restaurant staff start getting in on the dancing. It’s starting to be clear that it’s choreographed, adding to Holly’s confusion.
Dancers are swinging from the ceiling, break dancing, and making Holly as confused as ever. As each second of the song goes by, more and more people join in on the dancing.
The rest of Holly’s friends, besides Lauren, of course, are in a state of total confusion as well. They can’t figure out why this is going on and why the restaurant manager has no gotten in on the choreography.
Not only has the staff risen to their feet to join in on the fun, but soon, patrons from the tables start pairing up to waltz around as well.
At this point, Holly and her friends are laughing and enjoying the impromptu performance. We’re sure that she was catching on to the fact that, yes, she was witnessing a flash mob. What she didn’t know what this was all planned for her and there was even a bigger surprise coming up next.
Once the song hits full crescendo and the entire restaurant is dancing in synchronicity, the host of the show tells Pharrell, who’s been backstage watching all along, to go out and surprise Holly in person.
Pharrell, in his iconic hat, struts out into the restaurant and Holly can’t believe her eyes when she sees him.
In total shock, Holly’s jaw drops and she pushes herself back from the table, almost as if she’s seeing a ghost! Her biggest idol and music icon is right in front of her to say hello!
As Pharrell approaches her, Holly backs up a little like she’s not believing what she’s seeing, but he quickly comforts her by giving her a hug. It’s not long before the show’s host appears, and so do all of the cameras. The surprise is revealed that she is on a hidden camera show for all of her incredible charity work.
