Among the millions of people who own dogs, most consider them more of a family member than an animal. After all, dogs don’t judge, they love unconditionally, and they’re always ready to snuggle. That’s why owners spend a lot of money to keep their pets healthy, safe, and happy.
But not everyone has the financial means to shield their dogs from harsh winter conditions.
That’s where a partnership between UNchain Winston, Forsyth Humane Society, and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department comes in. They’re giving dog homes to families in Forsyth County…at no charge. With winter temperatures dropping to zero, they want to help families take better care of their pets.
People can make a dog’s life easier.
The challenge is they can’t do it without the public’s help. These organizations are asking for donations so they can accomplish their goal. So far this year, several low-income families have already received shelter for their pets.
Initially, the group started with roughly 25 dog homes. But as soon as the word got out about the project, they realized they needed more to keep up with the number of requests pouring in,
The dog houses must meet current county ordinances.
In Forsyth County, there’s an ordinance that requires people to provide their dogs with access to an appropriate shelter. That way, the animals have a way to get out of the rain, wind, and occasional snow. That means the dog houses must be resistant to the elements and structurally sound.
What and where to donate
Anyone who’s interested in donating needs to make sure the dog home meets the requirements. These don’t have to be new. The three organizations welcome used shelters in good condition.
All people have to do is take the dog house to the Forsyth Humane Society, located at 5570 Sturmer Park Circle in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They accept items from Tuesday through Saturday, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m.
Or if preferred, people can donate money online by visiting UNchain Winston’s website. For those who need shelter for their pets, a simple phone call to 336-365-8291 will get the process started. UNchain Winston is also asking for volunteers who can deliver the shelters to families.

Seeing a dog outside without shelter is heartbreaking. Not only that, it’s cruel. These animals depend on humans for most everything, including a place to stay warm. Every donated dog house makes a huge difference.
