Just imagine how terrifying it would be if your house caught on fire. At first, you might try to stop the fire from spreading. But once you realized that was a lost cause, you’d probably be panicked trying to escape with any pets and other things you need.

This is some people’s worst nightmare. A house fire would be a scary experience for anyone. But it would be even worse if you were elderly and couldn’t find a way out.

That’s just what happened to one couple

A husband and wife in Ceres, California, experienced this terrifying occurrence. One day, their house caught on fire. They didn’t know what to do.

They were trapped

Once the fire started, the couple couldn’t get out of the house. This would’ve been serious no matter what. But the fact that the two people inside were elderly made it an even scarier situation.

Firefighters showed up

When it comes to a fire this big, you have to call the fire department. They’re the only ones who have what it takes to put out the flames. But by the time the firefighters had shown up, the house was already largely engulfed.

They searched for people inside

The firefighters were worried there was someone inside. So, their most important job was to go inside to look for people. But during their search, they didn’t find anyone.

The front door had been kicked in

The first thing the firefighters noticed was that someone had kicked the door in, which was unusual. Initially, they weren’t sure what happened. But this gave them a clue to what might’ve occurred.

The couple had already been rescued

Don’t worry…the couple was fine. They’d been rescued by a good Samaritan who’d seen the fire outside. Luckily, they were safe and out of the house by the time the firefighters arrived.

His name was Patrick Lebow

Patrick was at work as a garbage man, doing his job the day the house caught on fire. When he passed it, he knew he had to do something to help. So, he risked it all and went inside to see if there was anyone who couldn’t get out.

He risked his life

This man put himself in significant danger just because he knew he couldn’t leave anyone behind. While someone might be expected to do that for a friend or a family member, Patrick did it for strangers. His actions were truly inspiring.

He’s a real hero

Patrick says he was simply in the right place at the right time when he saved the couple from the fire. But it’s more than that. Patrick is a hero and his community should be grateful to have him around.

Inspiration to be better neighbors

This kind of story should serve as an inspiration to others. Everyone can be a better neighbor. Most of the time, this doesn’t involve saving someone from a fire. Instead, you can just check in on someone you know, bake them a cake, or visit with them for a while. When people do something positive for their communities, there’s a long-lasting impact.
