As a kid during summer vacation, you assume you might find a bit of mischief— but a newborn baby? Well, that’s definitely not on the agenda.
A few years ago, 9-year-old Elysia Laub couldn’t believe her eyes when she discovered a newborn baby in her backyard.
The young girl from Lowell, Indiana, had heard rustling in the bushes and assumed it was one of their pet pigs. “We have two pigs,” she told WISH-TV (obtained via The Washington Post). “I thought they had a baby or something.” When she got a little closer, however, she saw it was something else entirely. She told NBC Chicago: “I just saw pink legs kicking away.”
“I knew it was alive and I knew we had something.”
“I could not second guess myself. I knew we had to go get help.”
Elysia immediately rushed to her mother. Both were stunned when they saw the newborn baby girl. At first, Elysia’s mom Heidi thought the baby was a robotic doll. But when they saw the umbilical cord and placenta still attached, their illusions were immediately shattered.
Heidi recalled: “I ran to the baby and scooped it up and I said, ‘Elysia run to the house and call 911 as soon as possible.” They wrapped the baby in a blanket until authorities arrived.
Although the baby had been left in the hot sun, doctors later said she was healthy, having only suffered sunburns. The officers started referring to her as “Miracle Baby Jane Doe.”
It’s unclear how long the baby had been in the bushes, but doctors estimate anywhere between a few hours and overnight.
By the time she had been found, maggots had accumulated on the placenta and umbilical cord. During a press conference, Sheriff John Buncich said:
“The baby was found in a very rural area, and to think that if the 9-year-old wouldn’t have gone outside, this could’ve had a very different outcome.”
Although police used canines and helicopters, they couldn’t locate the baby’s mother until a week later. According to ABC7 Chicago, she’s a teenage juvenile from Lowell. Due to her age, no other information has been released. The case was turned over to Indiana Department Services, and prosecutors were to determine whether charges would be filed.
Since everything has happened, Elysia has been called a ‘guardian angel’ and a ‘hero’— but the humble 9-year-old says she didn’t do it all herself:
“Somebody helped me,” she said.
“[It was] God.”
Since being uploaded, Elysia’s story has been viewed nearly 2 million times.
People are mind-blown by the girl’s unlikely discovery and impressed by her connection with the Lord:
“What a gem you are, little girl, for helping this baby. God bless you for it.”
“That girl is something else, she knows God worked through her.”
“LOVE LOVE LOVE HOW THEY CREDITED GOD.”
