One October day, animal rescue organization Rescue From the Heat received an urgent call. It was about a homeless poodle who had been hit by a car in Los Angeles. The rescue’s founder, Annie Hart, and fellow rescuer Eldad Hagar drove over to get her.

When they arrived, they spotted the poodle next to the wall. She was nervous and all alone.

Hart carefully approached the terrified animal, who looked at her with big, wide eyes.

Hart slowly put out her hand and touched the poodle’s matted fur. Once the poodle realized that Hart wanted to help her, she rolled onto her side and let Hart pet her belly.

Once Hart was sure the poodle trusted her, she picked the animal up and put a leash around her neck.

And that’s when the poodle did something amazing.

The poodle started licking Hart’s face, giving her tons of affectionate kisses. It seemed like the poodle was saying thank you for helping her.

Hart was stunned by the poodle’s reaction, and tears pooled in her eyes.

This little dog had been through so much, and it was clear all she wanted was for someone to help her. Hart brought the poodle over to her car and gave her a name: Layla.

Hart and Hagar brought Layla over to a local veterinarian’s office, where they learned some bad news: she had serious damage to her intestines and was in critical condition. Rescue From The Hart shared an update about Layla’s condition on Facebook.

“Layla’s doctors will go in and try to save her kidney by putting a stent in to drain from her kidney into the bladder… This is the next leg in Layla’s journey. For all intensive purposes our little girl does not even seem to know how sick she is. Layla is full of boundless energy, mischief and love,” they wrote.

Layla was hospitalized for the next two weeks, recovering from her ordeal. She was weak at first, but she slowly started regaining her strength.

Layla was in the hospital, Hart found the perfect foster home for her to go to once she was released. Layla’s foster parents began visiting her every day, showering the little dog with love.

Finally, Layla was well enough to be released from the hospital. Her foster parents took her home, where she continued her recovery.

Once Layla was well enough, Rescue From The Hart put her up for adoption. Soon, they announced that Layla had found her perfect forever home.

Now, Layla is as happy as can be. She loves her mom and her brother, Watson. This little pup’s story has a true fairytale ending.

Five years after being adopted, Rescue From the Heart shared an update on her.

The sweet pup is doing great, and she has tons of energy.

“Many of you have asked how sweet Layla (the scared poodle that kissed me when we rescued 5 years ago) is doing. And though I see her often, it’s near impossible to get a photo of her because she never sits still! So here’s a video of her doing what Layla does best: being silly!” the shelter wrote.

We’re so glad Layla ended up in such a wonderful forever home after everything she went through. What an adorable little pup.
