A 95-year-old woman’s dream of going to the beach comes true.
Kimberly just wanted to make her mother’s dream a reality when she set out to take her to Orange Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Her mother, Dottie, wanted to feel the soft, warm sand between her toes. Kimberly was bound and determined to make that happen for her.
Dottie’s beach day arrives.
The long-awaited moment finally happened and Ms. Dottie was ready to enjoy her day on the beach. However, due to a sore wrist, Kimberly was having trouble moving her mother’s wheelchair across the sand near their hotel.
Guards to the rescue.
The lifeguards noticed what was happening and jumped into action. Shane Martin, a lifeguard on duty, went across to ask if they needed assistance. Kimberly let Shane know that her mother would love to go down to the beach but couldn’t walk.
They didn’t hesitate to help Dottie.
“Our guards have been instructed to try to help people out if they’re having a tough time,” – Beach Safety Division Chief for Orange Beach, Brett Lesinger, told usnews.com.
The lifeguards put Dottie into an ATV and drove her to some lounge chairs under an umbrella. Shane easily lifted the petite woman, all of 79 pounds, and very carefully lowered her into one of the chairs.
Photos of Dottie’s time at the beach were posted to Facebook.
The lifeguards were so happy to be able to help her that they featured some images on their Facebook page. The posts immediately went viral.
Everyone loved “Ms. Dottie”
As the days went by the lifeguards started calling her “Ms. Dottie” and she was so appreciative of their attentiveness. How wonderful that Kimberly wouldn’t have to be concerned about her mother getting to her chair.
Each day Ms. Dottie was carried to her chair.
Like clockwork, Shane and the other lifeguards picked up Ms. Dottie and carried her to her lounge chair where she could spend the day enjoying the view. Kimberly never had to worry whether or not there would be help coming the next day because the kind crew of lifeguards was always there to help.
The lifeguards were more than happy to lend a hand.
“That was overwhelming… They were faithful. They were there. It made my mom’s whole trip.” – Kimberly told usnews.com
Kimberly and her mother tried several times to give the lifeguards a deserving tip. They refused to take one. “All the pay we need is watching her smile,” the guards told usnews.com
