When it comes to kids these days, most of them are more focused on playing video games and texting their friends than worried about their elderly neighbors.

That isn’t the case for one boy, though. He visits his elderly neighbor each day to make sure she wakes up from her naps and to just check on her general wellbeing.

Her granddaughter, Darrien, is very close with her and had even asked her to move in with her.

Her grandma continues to refuse, even after being diagnosed with two different types of cancer in the same year. Darrien says that her grandma just loves to be home and around her neighbors. Darrien explained that her grandma’s neighborhood isn’t the best and most people would look at it and not understand why she loves it so much. Darrien says that’s what makes the story so special.

She recently found out why her grandma loves her neighbors so much.

She posted a photo on social media and wrote:

“Caleb, the boy in the picture, is 7-years-old and in 1st grade. His grandmother lives directly next door to mine and is one neighbor she is especially close with. They have lived next to each other for as long as I can remember. The first time Nama and Caleb ever interacted was over an extra plate of food Nana had made and given to him. You would have thought Nana had given him a $100 bill. He was so grateful and thankful for a steak dinner.”

“Caleb has recently moved in with his grandmother and his dad, along with his two other brothers. Prior to this, he was over there almost every day, and just like his grandmother, has visited and checked on Nana frequently. The day I took the picture of them on the porch was the first day I really got to interact with him and get to know this genuine and kind young man. The conversations I’ve had him with him are so heartwarming and touching. Almost every time I think about his story and his heart, I want to tear up. My nana is so attached to him and the bond they have is incredible.

“He doesn’t come from much, but you can tell he has been raised on love. He will bust out a dance move in a heartbeat, will go on and on about how much he loves school, and make you laugh until you cry. This kid deserves the love he has received from this post. He stands out from the norm and brings so much joy into everyone’s life he is around. I am so thankful for him and the love he has shown my grandmother. I know for certain it has helped her on her hardest days. He will never know how much I truly appreciate him. I hope one day he realizes the impact he has left on her life and mine as well.”

Darrien feels better knowing that her grandmother has Caleb checking on her and watching over her.

Now, she knows why her grandma doesn’t want to leave the neighborhood. Darrien explained that in a couple weeks, her grandma has to start 30 rounds of radiation. She knows that Caleb will be there on the porch waiting for her when she gets back from her appointments and will help nurture her back to health.

Darrien hopes that her post will show everyone how easy it is to choose love over hatred.

She explained that Caleb and her grandma are happy sitting on the porch talking to each other while everyone else in the neighborhood goes about their business.

She asked for prayers for grandmother, as well.

They are hoping she can beat cancer and will have plenty more years to sit on her porch, live in her own home, and, of course, count on Caleb to tell her jokes and make her smile every single day. Darrien also recently got engaged, so she is expecting Nana to be there to watch her walk down the aisle.
