If you go for a bathtub instead of a shower at home, then you need to have in mind that, as you grow older, you may not be as flexible as at a younger age, so it could be dangerous.

Given that bathtubs are quite deep so that you can have a proper bath, getting in and out of them can be hard for some people. And that’s why they can come with handrails in order for those who use them to safely get in and out.

However, there’s always the possibility of not being able to reach the handrail, just like what happened to 53-year-old at the time Alison Gibson, who spent five days of her life trapped in the bathtub.

In October of 2018, Gibson got in her bathtub to have a bath, but when she was ready to get out, she just couldn’t reach the handrail. As a result, she got trapped there, unable to ask for help.

As she told the local news source, she “basically just sat there” hoping that someone would soon rescue her.

As it was fall and the temperature fell significantly during nighttime and given that there was nothing to eat or drink around, Gibson explained how she managed to survive.

“When I got cold, I ran the hot water. And when I got thirsty, I ran the cold water and drank the cold water out of my hand,” she told Inside Edition.

After five days had passed, the woman started losing hope. She needed help but she had no idea how she could get out of there since the handrail was out of reach.

Luckily, a postal worker saved her life.

The man happened to notice that there was mail piling up at her home, and he got a bit concerned. So, he notified the neighbors who immediately tried to reach out to her in order to see if everything was okay.

Eventually, they went outside the woman’s bathroom and yelled, trying to get an answer, and Gibson at that point realized that there was still hope.

“Somebody was outside my window and they started yelling so I yelled back,” she recalled.

Right after that, the police were called. Once the officers got to Gibson’s house, they tried to figure out how they could enter the house.

Chesaning Police Chief Stacey Wilburn, along with another officer, climbed through a window and got into the house.

“In the bathroom when we opened the door the back of it was covered in mold, the floors were soaking wet, the paint on the walls was bubbling from all of the moisture and actually the ceiling was dripping wet,” Wilborn told Inside Edition.

The woman was found in a relatively good condition, but she was taken to a local hospital where she stayed for four days to make sure she was healthy.

Gibson felt blessed to be alive and she added that she planned to have a walk-in tub installed soon.

It goes to show how important it is to look out for your neighbors and to follow your gut if something doesn’t seem right.
