Man spots lump on the highway, slamming his brakes when he realizes it’s a dog in need
Rodrigo spotted the lump from the opposite side of the road and was compelled to turn around to investigate what it was. It’s a good thing he did.

Some people shouldn’t own pets and for one unfortunate dog, he found himself with an owner that wasn’t necessarily loving. Thankfully, there are other people who are the complete opposite and go out of their way to help animals that are in need.

Driving down the road, you never know what you are going to see.

Highways are the crossroads of culture and country. They also are a hotspot for animals who are attempting to cross to the other side and, for some reason, a place to leave unwanted pets. Many pet owners who don’t want their animal anymore will just drop off their pets on the side of the road on a highway shoulder. Much of the time, the pet doesn’t make it.

Thankfully, people like Rodrigo Gonzalez exist.

Rodrigo was driving down the road in Mexico one day when he noticed something on the other side of the road, opposite the direction he was driving. Fearing that his suspicion was true, he turned his truck around and went to see what it was.

As he drove closer his suspicions were confirmed.

As Rodrigo pulled up, the camera shows a sad picture indeed. A dog is splayed across the left shoulder and far-left highway lane as people drive by, inches away from hitting it. The dog is motionless and may not even be alive. It is quite literally motionless on a busy highway.

When he pulled up, the dog made a small amount of movement, signaling to Rodrigo that he was still alive.

You can see the pitiful state this pup is in as the truck rolls to a stop. When he rolls the window down, the dog responds as he sees a potential savior. The scene is heartbreaking as you realize what had to transpire for this dog to end up here.

Crawling and stumbling, the dog looks to Rodrigo for help.

You can tell the dog has been seriously injured as it tries to make its way to the good Samaritan. As he opened his door, the dog limped forward and felt a loving hand touch him.

He picks up the dog and lays him the backseat to seek help.

Rodrigo put himself in danger just by stopping on a busy highway. You can hear the people whizzing past him, honking their annoyance at the ten-second slowdown. Unbeknownst to many of them, Rodrigo was saving a life.

Taking the dog to the vet, the journey was far from over.

The dog was in serious condition. After spending over a week in the hospital, the dog was finally able to leave. Rodrigo named him Lucky, probably after the incredible chances of him living and making it through the ordeal!

The future seemed bleak for Lucky.

After the injury (I would guess he was hit by a car), Lucky lost one of his eyes and had a severe spinal cord injury. The vet didn’t think that Lucky would ever walk again.

In a future follow up video, we see Rodrigo sitting on the grass with a crate next to him.

Rodrigo posted a video that showed Lucky coming out of the crate to sit on the grass. As he opened the container, we see a wet little nose stick out. The dog wasn’t quite able to make it out on his own, but the journey wasn’t done!

Rodrigo has saved more than 21 dogs!

Moonlighting as a good Samaritan, Rodrigo really has a knack for helping these animals. In a video that he released later, we see the golden pup taking some steps towards other dogs! He seems to have made some friends and is doing his own version of walking!

A heart of gold

There was no obligation to stop and check out the “lump of golden fur” that was on the side of the road. It wouldn’t matter that much if he didn’t – unless you are that lump of golden fur. Rodrigo didn’t change the world. He just changed that dog’s world.
