Soldiers spend a lot of time away from their families, and they miss so much while serving our country.

When they finally get to come home, it’s a big occasion and everyone is happy about it. One troop got to reunite with his family on the “Today Show,” and it was a complete surprise.

Navy officer Devin Turner, from San Diego, was one of the troops who stopped by the plaza for some recognition.

When Carson Daily introduced him, he realized there was more going on than just a little recognition.

Daily said:

“Our top story this morning is Fleet Week. As our ships sailed to New York, people from all over came to honor the military, including one family who traveled all the way from San Diego to surprise their husband and father, Devon Turner.”

Devon couldn’t believe what he was hearing, but he was even more shocked by what he saw.

He turned around and there was his wife, son, and daughter. Neither the officer nor his children knew about the reunion. It was a great surprise from Mrs. Turner. It was a beautiful moment, and there were plenty of tears and cheers from the audience.

There were plenty of fun times for the other troops, too.

They received a big welcome back, and Darius Rucker and Jimmy Fallon even took the Hootie & the Blowfish hit “Only Wanna Be with You” and turned it into a song called “Only Wanna Thank The Troops.” They performed it and the troops cheered, sang, and danced to the funny lyrics. Those lyrics include:

“Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marines, here’s to the Navy for protecting all our seas. You serve with bravery, you serve with style, you serve with six-pack abs, I can barely run a mile. Well, we owe it all to you. I only wanna thank the troops.”

And:

“You fight for freedom all across the land. I hope while you are here you have a one-night stand. Let loose in New York and make it great. Hope when your captain pukes you get it all on tape. Just don’t post it on YouTube. I only wanna thank the troops.”

That’s not all the troops get to be treated to on their return.

According to Patch NYC, they will also be getting a lot of great discounts at many local businesses in the city. Some of those discounts include:

“Service members will get 50 percent off all cocktails $16 and under at Irvington, Kingside and Mr. Purple, as well as 50 percent off all cocktails $18 and under at The Roof, Whiskey Blue, and The Campbell. Sailors can also enjoy happy hour specials at Haven Rooftop at the Sanctuary Hotel.”

We could never thank our soldiers enough for serving our country and protecting us.

They make huge sacrifices every day and spend months away from their families. Some of them are coming home to newborn babies that they will be meeting for the first time, and others are coming home to find that their loved ones have passed away while they were serving.

Fleet Week is just one of the many ways we celebrate our troops and thank them for everything they have done for us. As they all arrive and then spread out to spend time with their families, we should be happy for them and know that in just a few short weeks, they will have to ship out and leave it all behind. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it. We should all be proud to have such amazing soldiers who are ready to fight for us.
