Nick Bostic was driving around Lafayette, Indiana to gas up his car at around 12:30 am when he passed by a house on fire.

He didn’t have his phone on him so he couldn’t call 911. If he leaves to find someone to call 911, it might be too late. So he put his car in reverse and sprinted towards the burning house. He had no idea if there was someone inside but he had to try.

And it’s a good thing he took this chance.

Upstairs, he found a one-year-old baby and three teenagers aged between 13 and 18, who had been sleeping and didn’t notice or smell the fire. They woke up because of Nick’s screaming.

He helped them get down the stairs and out of the burning house.

He asked the older children if there was still anyone inside. And they said yes.

Their 6-year-old sister was still inside the house.

“Without hesitation,” the police recalled, “he ran back into the burning house. Not knowing where the child was, he went to the last place where he located the other children — the upstairs.”

When he went back, Nick described the inside of the house as a black lagoon of smoke.

He went back upstairs to look for the little girl but it was hard amidst all the smoke and fire. He looked through all the corners of the rooms and under the bed but she wasn’t there. He went back to the stairs to search for her on the ground floor.

But what he saw drew him back. All he could see was darkness. He knew he couldn’t go back down.

He looked for a window to break and escape when he heard her cry from downstairs. He knew he had to get the little girl out but the darkness scared him.

But he was determined.

“He described it as so black that he couldn’t see anything in font of him, and the heat from the fire made it seem as if he was walking into an oven. Nicholas crawled on the ground, feeling in front of him with his hands, and used the child’s cries to help him locate her in the darkness,” the police shared.

And he found her!

Once he got her, he couldn’t find the backdoor, where he first entered. He went back upstairs, because the smoke wasn’t as thick, and prepared to jump out the window.

He punched open the window, grabbed the little girl, and jumped out. He even made sure to land on his side where he wasn’t holding the girl to keep her safe.

That was when the police arrived, who took the little girl and help her recover. When they took the girl, Nick fell down to the ground, barely breathing.

And even when he could barely breathe, he asked the police if the little girl was okay.

She was okay and only suffered a minor cut on her foot.

Nick, however, was seriously injured and had to be flown to Indianapolis to be treated for severe inhalation and a large gash on his arm. But they were able to discharge him after three days.

David and Tiera Barrett, the parents of the four minors he rescued, were grateful for Nick’s selflessness.

“Whatever brought him there at that moment,” David said. “I feel like he was God sent. He saved something that was priceless.”

Nick said he was just at the right place at the right time.

“I literally told him he’s now part of our family,” David added. “And he was all on board with it. Once we get settled someplace, we’re going to invite him over and his girlfriend for dinner.”
