He went in as a pizza delivery guy but came out a hero.

Nicholas Bostic from Lafayette, Indiana was driving through a neighborhood just past midnight. Then, he drove through something so terrifying that he needed to act.

One of the neighborhood homes was ablaze. Bostic immediately stopped driving and put his car in reverse according to the Lafayette Police Department.

A tough call

Bostic was torn between calling for help and rushing inside the burning home.

He knew he didn’t have time to call or ask someone else to call emergency services for him so he decided to act on his instincts.

While rushing into a burning house is dangerous, Bostic did it anyway. He made his way to the back of the house and entered through the back door.

He immediately searched for any occupants.

According to the police department’s statement, he was screaming and calling out to anyone who might still be inside.

No one was responding to his alerts but Bostic didn’t leave anything to chance. He went deeper into the burning house where he eventually found the stairs.

His instincts were spot-on.

Once he reached the second floor, he thanked his intuition for telling him not to give up.

Upstairs, he found four kids ranging from the ages of 1 to 18. Apparently, his calls and screams woke them up.

If Bostic didn’t come to their rescue, they could’ve found themselves in even graver danger.

Thankfully all of them were able to evacuate safely. However, the ordeal wasn’t over just yet.

Bostic learned from the occupants that there was still a six-year-old child inside.

Without hesitating, Bostic rushed back in.

He immediately went upstairs as it was the place where he found the children.

Even as the house burned and the fire raged, he tried his best not to leave a bed unturned.

The child wasn’t there.

When he realized that the child was not upstairs, he went back to the staircase.

He turned back, however, when he saw what he described as a “black lagoon” of smoke.

He was about to choose another way to exit the building but he heard the cries of a child coming from downstairs.

A hero through and through

Weighing his options one last time, Bostic wrapped his shirt around his face and descended.

He shared that it was like walking into an oven. The thick smoke couldn’t even let him see his hands.

To navigate, he had to crawl down and pat the floor in front of him while using the cries for directions.

When he found the child, he immediately snatched her up and made their way back upstairs.

With no other exits available, he smashed the windows and jumped from the second floor. He handed the child to the rescuers.

Then, Bostic collapsed to the ground.

He was seriously injured after inhaling a dangerous amount of smoke. Rescuers stabilized his condition before flying him out of the scene.

The little girl was miraculously unharmed.

For his actions, the Mayor and the first responders publicly recognized his heroic actions that night.

Truly, you can never guess where a hero can come from. But when the opportunity presents itself, a hero will always show up.
