Learning new things is always tricky. For some, it is an exciting time to experience new things and for others, it is usually more frightening and not something to be looked forward to. It usually comes to personality which side you are one but for one dog, it is obvious where he stands!
Hobbes is a puppy that is as cute as he is scared.
One of the things that puppies need to learn is going up and down the stairs. Stairs are basically little obstacle courses for babies and puppies alike. Like little walls, you have to get into a kind of rhythm in order to go up or down them well. When you have a little body (like a puppy or baby), there is no rhythm just a struggle all the way through.
To a puppy, going down stairs is basically like stepping off a cliff, over and over again.
Each little step is only a foot or two, but to a little puppy, its basically a cliff! Every time a step needs to be conquered they need to essentially throw themselves over the edge and hope that there is something at the bottom. For the little guys, this is quite a scary experience.
You can see that his dad is teaching him patiently and slowly.
A good teacher is so important! Little Hobbes is as cute as can be and really is trying to learn. Too bad his puppy brain is getting in the way and he just can’t stop his tail from wagging every time he is talked to in a sweet voice.
Sniffing love the edge, Hobbes is building up the courage.
A dog will always sniff out something before anything else. Cute little Hobbes sticks out his nose over the edge and then backs up, confirming that he will not be going over that cliff edge today. His dad looks at him and knows it is going to take some creative learning.
After a bark or two from Hobbes, a new plan is instituted.
When Hobbes’ dad tries to get him over the edge a few times, he refuses and lets out a bark or two. This seems to be the final straw for dad as he thinks of a new plan. Thinking for a second, he knows exactly what his next move is going to be.
Getting down on all fours, Hobbes’ dad climbs up the stairs and turns around. We all know what is coming next!
Sometimes you need to lead by example. Hobbes’ dad knows this and decides that he is going to climb down the stairs just like Hobbes would. The result is a hilarious video of a human and dog crawling down the stairs. It sometimes takes a bit of practice, but with puppies, consistency is key!
After each step, they encourage the little pup.
Encouragement is key to making good behavior permanent. After each little “hop” down the stairs, the couple praises little Hobbes with the best compliment possible. The renowned “good boy”. After a few “good boy’s”, Hobbes is starting to get the hang of these stair things. He is wobbling, flopping, and crawling down the stairs in no time flat!
