Lots of children run lemonade stands during the summer to make a couple of dollars. But a 6-year-old in Denver, Colorado, is running a lemonade stand for a very special purpose — to take his mom on a date.

Of course, taking Mom on a date is usually Dad’s job.

However, Brady lost his dad less than a month ago. Brandon Campbell passed away on July 7 after struggling through colon cancer. He was 37 years old.

The day after his dad died, Brady went to his mom, Amanda Campbell, and told her that he wanted to open a lemonade stand to take her on a date.

“My dad and I came up with the idea of a lemonade stand to take my mom on a date because I didn’t have enough money and I wanted to pay, so I did it,” said Brady.

Campbell was touched.

But she knew that father and son had actually been planning this for several months, even making the signs for the lemonade stand together.

“I think he kind of came up with it himself,” she said. “It just never really happened because it was raining or Brandon was feeling too sick. He’s kind of scheming with a friend of ours, of what he wants to do. He does want to take me out every week.”

When the local community found out about Brady’s project, they rallied around him.

When one Denver police officer stopped to see what all the fuss was about, he called his fellow officers and firefighters, who came by the area in droves. They even let Brady spray a fire hose, to the delight of the little boy.

Brady’s lemonade stand earned a grand total of $244.

“My husband would be proud because he was a very successful businessman, so I’m sure he would have loved that,” said Campbell.

Meanwhile, the Campbells’ neighbor put together a GoFundMe page they’re calling a “virtual lemonade stand.” The funds raised will go toward cancer research as well as for providing for the family’s needs.

Brady will be starting first grade in the fall.

While he’s struggling with the loss of his father, he’s primarily concerned about his mom and how she’s doing.

“He’s been tough and he’s been more concerned about me,” she said. “He just says ‘I’m glad he doesn’t have cancer any more. I’m glad he doesn’t have pain.’” That brings, I think, Brady a lot of peace and me peace.”

While the family is grieving over the loss of Brandon Campbell, they hope their story will encourage people to be tested for colon cancer and that more research will be done to find better and more effective treatments.

Brandon Campbell’s diagnosis came only six months before his death at the young age of 37. He was an exceedingly healthy man who ran marathons and got up every day at 4 o’clock to start his exercise routine.

While Brandon Campbell’s life ended too soon, there’s no doubt he left a legacy of love in the little things — like date nights with Mom.
