When a teen saw an angry dog attacking a group of kids, he immediately took action to save them.

According to Dogsbite.org, from 2005 to 2018, more than 471 Americans have died due to injuries from dog attacks. It’s common to hear opinions about Pit-bulls causing attacks like these, but according to Marjie Alonso, executive director of IAABCT or the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, one breed isn’t more aggressive than another.

What does this mean?

It means that regardless of their breeds, may it be a Pit-bull or a Golden Retriever, a dog can get aggressive. Just like us, humans, there can be triggers, and of course, what these animals go through will ultimately change how they act as well.

That’s why we need to know why this happens.

“What we can observe is that dogs that are highly aroused in terms of excitation, in terms of prey drive [or] in terms of protection will then kind of ramp up and the switch just flips and that’s when dogs are really dangerous, especially in groups,” Alonso said to WBUR.

It was Monday morning, everyone was busy, and 13-year-old Jamal Anderson was inside his home in Englewood, Chicago, when he noticed a commotion.

Karl Kelly, Jamal’s 7-year-old cousin, was on their porch with his friends, they were preparing to go to school when an aggressive dog spotted them.

The dog was very aggressive and was very big as well. According to the news report, the dog could have been around the same weight as Karl.

The dog immediately tried to attack the young boy!

Shocked, Karl didn’t know what to do. At first, he tried avoiding the dog, but the aggressive canine first tried to bite his leg but failed, then it decided to grab onto Karl’s backpack.

The other kids started going inside the house. They were all scared and were yelling! That’s when Jamal heard the screams outside, and he knew something was wrong!

“I just kept hearing the three kids yelling,” Anderson told in his interview. “They’re all just yelling, screaming, crying and … but they didn’t know what to do because they’re still young.”

Everything was caught on the CCTV, and it was a scary situation.

Karl tried running away, but the dog bit his bag and dragged the poor boy down the stairs. Then, the dog was ready to bite the boy on the leg when we see Jamal ran outside and saw the aggressive dog had already cornered Karl.

In a split second, Jamal grabbed the broom that he saw, and he quickly hit the dog once, thus allowing his cousin to run away without injury.

“I just seen the broom and grabbed it, grabbed it, and just jumped down the stairs. And I hit it real hard,” Jamal said, recalling what happened.

We can’t imagine what could have happened to Karl if Jamal didn’t help him. It could have been a very different ending!

“Then the dog ran away,” said Karl.

Can you imagine being in this situation? Facing danger like this, where the boy could not even do anything to save himself from the aggressive dog, it’s just so heartbreaking.

In the news report, they showed the bite marks on Karl’s backpack, a reminder of what could have happened to the young boy if his cousin didn’t show up.

That broom on the porch also played a huge part in saving Karl.

“I left it on the porch,” said Erica Clayborn, Jamal’s mother. “Thank God I left that broom on the porch. Thank God I did, mm-hmm.”

According to Karl and Jamal’s family, the dog was not familiar to them. They have never seen this dog before, and it was unclear who the owner is or where the dog is now.

It was a very terrifying situation!

A young boy like Karl wouldn’t be able to defend himself from a dog this big and strong, and without his cousin, we can’t even imagine what could have happened to him.

Kudos to Jamal for being a brave young man!
