One Amazon driver recently learned that lesson the hard way when he narrowly avoided being crushed by a train.

Alexander Evans is an Amazon driver in Milwaukee who had a close encounter with his life that he almost didn’t walk away from. Evans is a daily driver for Amazona and was transporting packages just west of Milwaukee when the unthinkable happened.

Tracing the route on a map, he explained what happened.

While on his route, there is a section of road that runs parallel to some train tracks. As he was heading down the hill, he didn’t see or notice a train on his left side at all. To make matters worse, he is deaf in his left ear and didn’t hear the train honking at all.

As he went parallel to the train, he got to the tracks where they intersected with the road.

“I just tried. I made a look as I was going down the hill, the hill to swerve. I didn’t see anything. He was on my left side,” Evans said.

In almost a blind turn down a hill, Evans turned left across the tracks. While he was crossing, the worst thing possible happened. The train, going 80mph, was pummeling towards him. When he finally heard the train laying on the horn, he made a last-ditch effort to smash the gas and cross as far as he could.

“Literally it was like one long beep, like a horn from the, from the train, and I put my foot on the gas. I was like I don’t know how far I’m going to get away from him,” he said.

That last-ditch effort likely saved his life.

As he hit the gas, he was able to get a few more vital inches over the track. The train then slammed into him, sending the car flying in an explosion of air and metal.

“Just air and the pressure. I felt the airbags, and it was just — I, I didn’t know what to feel to be honest with you,” he said.

The train had sheared off the back of his truck, leaving the cab relatively untouched and Evans alive.

Evans is just happy to be alive, let alone unhurt.

What’s crazy is that the intersection has no lights, warnings, or anything of the sort. For Evans, it was a true miracle. As reporters pointed out, this Thanksgiving will have a special place in his heart. If he didn’t have a reason to give thanks before, he sure has one now.

“I, I still can’t believe it myself right now as well,” Evans said.
