If you work for a delivery company, you know how dangerous the job is. You won’t just expose yourself to harsh weather conditions but there’s also a long list of animal hazards you have to be prepared for. On the other side of the coin, working in such industry allows you to meet new friends.

Katie Newhouser was on her way to a condo complex somewhere in Rancho Cucamonga, California when she met a new friend.

It was Leo, a pit bull.

For most people, the breed is scary.

They think that pit bulls are aggressive and will eventually hurt their humans. But Leo was different. Each time Katie passed by the neighborhood, he’d always be there to give her a warm greeting.

She shared:

“Whenever I’d turn up at the complex, he’d apparently go crazy, and he’d want to come down and see me. He just took a liking to me for some reason. He’d always come up and lick me.”

He likes getting on her truck, too.

He would jump inside it and sit there. He’d sniff around and stay there even if Katie had to leave.

Katie got close to Leo’s human.

She met Tina and they instantly became friends. They talked a lot of Leo. Tina shared that she’d been taking care of Leo since he was a small malnourished puppy. Her son brought him home one day.

As a puppy, Leo was weak. Tina had to bottle-fed him until he was able to eat on his own. She continued to take care of him until his health returned.

Tina and Leo formed a special bond.

“They were very very close and did everything together. I don’t think that dogs ever forget anyone who they have been that close to,” Katie shared.

One day, Katie heard a tragic news.

Tina, Leo’s human and her good friend, passed away. It was shattering for her and she knew it was the same for Leo.

Katie wondered about the poor pit bull’s future.

She reached out to Tina’s son to ask about Leo. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to care for the dog because he’s an active marine on duty. Plus, he had nowhere to keep the dog safely.

Katie made an important decision.

She just couldn’t leave Leo alone. That would surely break his spirit.

She decided to be Leo’s new mom.

The decision wasn’t easy. Katie already had three dogs at home and she wasn’t sure what will happen if she bring home a pit bull.

Fortunately, there was nothing to worry about.

Leo is a super friendly dog. He became friends with his new siblings in an instant.

Katie shared:

“It was probably confusing for him at first, [but] he has adapted well. He and his brother Moose are inseparable. Bailey, his sister, has taken a while to come around, [but] they actually play now … once Leo was introduced into the house, the whole vibe changed.”

Leo missed Tina.

Even if he found a new home, Leo wasn’t happy at first. He missed Tina so much. During the first few nights, he would whine until he fell asleep.

It was a good thing that Katie showered Leo with love. He was able to mend his broken heart and be filled with hope and happiness again. Being around his siblings helped, too.
