This neighborhood is full of good people.

The media often likes to paint a picture of a divided country. There are videos and photos of neighbors fighting and calling the police on each other, police shooting innocent people, or being shot on the job themselves. It’s a cruel world out there, but not every place is like that.

There is still plenty of neighborhoods full of good people.

One video shows that to be true. When a police officer was involved in a car accident in a Chicago neighborhood, numerous residents jumped into action to help.

Another neighbor was taping the entire thing and was just as surprised as the police officer who was on the receiving end of the help. The video has now gone viral.

It all started when Kevin J. Russell was driving down Jeffrey Boulevard on his way home from work.

He happened to witness a car accident and knew he couldn’t stand by and do nothing.

He saw a police officer driving down the road with the lights and siren on. The police car went through an intersection, and an SUV almost crashed into it while failing to yield.

The police officer did everything to avoid a collision and hit the brakes hard before sliding into a tree. The SUV sped away, but the police car was totaled, and the officer was injured.

Kevin got his phone out and started to record everything.

He said:

“I saw a lot of bystanders come over and assist, check on the officer, actually pull them out of the vehicle.”

He also shared the video on Facebook along with the caption:

“Today after work riding down Jeffrey I saw this Chicago Police truck flying down the street with their siren on and some idiot drove in the intersection so they crashed into a tree avoid them. Watch all the good Samaritans come to help/check on the police officer and drag him out the car!”

Other people in the neighborhood became aware of the crash.

Pastor Phillip Cusic was inside his church when he heard the commotion and came running. He said:

“First I heard a car moving fast, I mean it was like (makes a noise) and then you could hear the wheels screeching and then a boom! We were right here in the middle of the street so we just sort of got him by his arm and sort of helped escort him over to the street but he was more concerned with his fellow officer.”

Cusic and another man ran over to the car and helped the officer to the ground.

He was clearly scared and hurt. Another woman called 911 on her cellphone. A woman living nearby brought pillows and blankets over to the officer to help keep him comfortable until help arrived.

Belinda Chism explained:

“We had people on their phones calling 911. We help one another. It doesn’t matter who they are or what job they have.”

While the world seems to be surprised that so many strangers in one neighborhood would work together to help a police officer, the people who helped say it’s a common thing.

They live near each other and help each other every day. It was just the right thing to do, and most of them didn’t think twice about it.

Russell added:

“The officer is a human being, he’s not just an officer or an object.

Chism added:

“There are people who do care what’s going on in the world. I am not too surprised. I know we have good people in the world.”

Help eventually arrived for the police officer, and he was treated. He is expected to be OK. He will likely never forget the kind people who came to his aid when he was hurt and scared. This is how everyone should be, and it shows that there are still plenty of good people in the world.
