We’re all on different paths in life, and it can take some of us a longer time to achieve our dreams than others.

Perhaps you dreamt of being a teacher while you were still a student, or you longed to be the manager of the retail store you stacked shelves at on the weekends.

As for Jaines Andrades, she worked as a janitor at a hospital where she was desperate to work as a nurse.

Jaines used her janitor’s role to pay the bills while she put herself through nursing school, but she doesn’t feel that her years of cleaning were wasted.

Speaking to NN affiliate WBZ-TV about her job, she said:

“It’s tough to be the person that cleans. If I had to go back and do it again, I would. It’s so worth it.”

Jaines shared her inspirational story to Facebook, accompanied by a photo showing three nametag cards.

The first card shows Jaines when she was a janitor, and the second shows her as a registered nurse. The third shows Jaines as she is now, a nurse practitioner in trauma surgery.

As the photo’s caption, Jaines wrote:

“10 years of work but it was worth it! I’m a provider at the same place I use to clean 🙌🏾

Jaines had been working at a fast food restaurant when she decided to apply for a job at the Springfield hospital. She attended an interview, and was offered her janitor job.

Her goal had always been to help people, and cleaning was a good place to start.

She said:

“Even if it was cleaning, as long as I was near patient care I’d be able to observe things. I thought it was a good idea.”

And, after years of hard work and dedication, Jaines has now achieved her dream.

Even so, Jaines wants people to know just how important the janitors and cleaners are at her workplace.

She said:

“Nurses and providers, we get the credit more often but people in environmental and phlebotomy and dietary all of them have such a huge role. I couldn’t do my job without them.”

Two weeks ago, Jaines started her new job in trauma surgery.

She shared a message of inspiration to others who aspire to be something they’re not, saying on an interview with ABC News:

“I hope that my story can inspire people who feel maybe discouraged by their past or where they come from. I just want to let them know that if I can do it, anyone can.”
