Bus driver Mike Blair is diligent about his job.
The kind-hearted driver always goes above and beyond for his passengers. He has a sixth sense when it comes to determining whether they’re alright— so, when he spotted a senior at a bus stop behaving oddly, he instantly knew something was wrong.
The incident occurred in August of last year while Blair was driving his regular route. As per usual, he was taking in his surroundings when a senior at the bus stop caught his eye.
The elderly man had been waiting in the boiling heat.
Blair estimates it must have been 105 degrees that day, describing the weather as ‘smoking hot’. He told Fox News:
“This one gentleman, he did not board the bus.”
“He seemed like he started to grasp the wall and seemed to be in distress.”
That was all it took for Blair to leap into action. Getting up, Blair assisted the man into the bus, seating him in front of the air conditioner. However, something down inside him told him he needed to do more. That’s when the driver remembered he had a water bottle in his lunchbox.
Blair proceeded to give the senior sips of cold water from his water bottle. After roughly ten minutes, the passenger was back up on his feet.
“He got off the bus and said ‘thank you’. As he got off, he said, ‘I’m 92 years old.'”
“Simply amazing,” said Blair.
Unbeknownst to Blair, passenger Brent Leabu had witnessed the driver’s kind actions and snapped a photo of the event.
He uploaded the photo to Twitter and Reddit, where it has since gone viral. The photo’s caption reads:
“Props to this @RTCSNV bus driver who gave a dehydrated elderly rider a water from his lunch cooler.”
Blair had no idea someone had photographed him. In fact, he didn’t even realize his story had gone viral until his employer, Keolis, reached out to him. Francis Julien, the company’s general manager, said Keolis is very proud of their employee.
To show Blair their gratitude, they even bought him a gift bag, balloons, and a cake. Because he doesn’t have Twitter, they also framed the viral tweet so he can remember the event.
Blair, however, doesn’t think he did anything special. “We are all brothers and sisters,” he noted. “I think anyone would’ve done that.” Since going viral, Blair says he doesn’t have an interest in money or fame but instead hopes that: “Maybe this will touch people’s hearts so they will do something kind as well.”
Since being shared, Blair’s act of kindness has been admired thousands of times.
People love that he sensed the man’s discomfort, going out of his way to help. A few comments on the video read:
“That bus driver will be blessed. Bless the 92-year-old man for surviving the heat.”
“To Mr. Blair, thank you for helping the gentleman out. You are truly an amazing person. Keep up the good work.”
“Being kind really costs nothing and can touch all hearts, young and old. Glad the right bus driver was on that route that day.”
