It seems as though the more that bad things happen, the more people are finding ways to make dark days a little bit brighter. Sometimes, that’s with a recent story. Other times, it’s from an incident that happened in the past. Like one tale of a selfless woman in New York.
Riding the subway
As she’d done so many times before, a woman was taking the subway home from Times Square in New York City in 2015. This particular day was cold, making her eager to reach the warmth of her house. But what seemed like an ordinary day would turn into something extraordinary.
Meet Kay Brown
Kay had no idea that a unique opportunity would come her way. But her subway ride showed just how kind-hearted some people are. While waiting in line, she spotted something that shocked and horrified her.
A homeless person
What Kay saw that day wasn’t just any homeless person. Instead, it was a woman. But it was what this individual didn’t have that was so upsetting.
Unprepared for winter
As Kay explained to a reporter, this particular homeless woman was only wearing a thin tee shirt and a lightweight jacket. That was bad enough. But then Kay noticed something else. This poor woman didn’t even have any shoes on her feet.
She had to do something to help
There was no way that Kay could turn a blind eye. This homeless lady had bare feet in the middle of winter. Without hesitating for a second, she removed her shoes, walked over to the woman, and offered them to her.
Beyond grateful
The lady was so incredibly happy and grateful that a stranger would give her the shoes off her feet. But that’s exactly what Kay did. At that moment, she wasn’t thinking of herself but more of what she could do to lend a helping hand to another human being.
“Are you sure?”
That was the initial question the homeless woman asked Kay. Here she was in a bad situation yet she didn’t want to put any pressure on Kay for offering her shoes. How ironic…they were both more concerned about each other than themselves.
A special moment
Amazingly, Kay’s shoes fit this stranger perfectly. As the woman stared at her feet that were no longer bare, she was still shocked. Then, she turned to Kay and gave her a big hug. Although nothing significant was said between the two, they both went on their way feeling good.
A funny twist
Not only does Kay have a huge heart but apparently, she also has a bad habit. You see, she’s notorious for leaving the house wearing mismatched socked. She remembered thinking at the time that she hoped she’d put on matching socks that morning…but nope, she didn’t. Although slightly embarrassed, it gave her a good chuckle.
A lesson for all of us
You never know when you’ll come across someone who needs help. Giving selflessly will benefit another individual and make you feel good at the same time. Especially during the pandemic, we all have a perfect opportunity to step up to the plate to lend a hand to another human.
