Clicks and singling out children by bullying them for being different is something that was considered to be a rough part of middle or high school.
But some kids are refusing to accept this as the norm.
Some kids are standing up and changing this elitist and hurtful behavior and replacing it with kindness.
Thanks to kids like this, freshman Cale Wrenn has a completely different outlook on what high school should be like.
The 14-year-old was befriended by some cool upperclassmen after they learned that the North Carolina High School student was being bullied.
“At lunch, I had sat alone and I was actually getting called short and stuff,” said Cale told New Haven Register.
“I was used to getting picked on for my height and I wasn’t that upset when it happened in high school because I assumed it would.”
Cale ended up telling his sister about the hard day he had.
“When I got home, I told my sister about all of that and my sister, being my sister, made a huge tweet about it that’s viral right now.”
Leah tweeted a picture of her brother along with a screenshot of the text conversation they had about his day.
That tweet ended up going viral with messages of kindness pouring in for Cale.
Many of them told him to keep his head up. That he should know that he is a “king” and its only his opinion of himself that matters. Someone even sent him a pair of cool LeBron sneakers.
Not only did Cale see that people cared about him online, but he found that people did in person too.
Members of the school’s Boys to Men Club and football and basketball teams decided that they would take Cale under their wings.
“We decided to catch him off guard at lunch and have lunch with him and show him around the school and make sure he was OK and give him new friends,” Demontez Canada, a senior and member of the football and basketball teams, told WLKY.
Tyvon Smoot, who is a senior and a soon-to-be member of the Boys to Men Club, which prepares seniors for adulthood by focusing on academic performance and community service, said he is happy that he and his friends have Cale’s back.
“I was raised to help people. My mama didn’t raise me to do nothing so when I see stuff like that, then I need to help because I wouldn’t want anybody to do that to me and it happened to me before when I first moved to North Carolina,” said Smoot.
“I didn’t have any friends, I used to sit by myself, so I know how he feels. I’m just glad that he has friends that he can count on, that he can talk to, and that he can know that we’ve got his back.”
Cale said that it made him really happy to know that there were people out there who cared about him and wanted to be his friend.
He was grateful to his sister for helping him to make friends, as well as his new friends who will be there to talk to if he ever needs anything. He says he hopes his story will help others who sit alone at lunch to find friends like he did.
“I know I’m not the only person that sits alone at lunch. In different periods there are different freshmen and juniors and sophomores who sit alone at lunch and I just wish we can do something for them, too. It felt kind of weird, it just being me who got reached out to and I wish we could do something for all of the people who sit alone, give them all someone to sit with at lunch,” Cale said.
